Crafting a Voice of Love & Play

A close friend and host of the Chicago podcast, Underscore, suggested an exciting project: a spinoff series focusing on 'pop nun' Sister Corita Kent's life, work, and the impact of her "Ten Rules" from the Immaculate Heart College Art Department. Our aim was to craft a visual identity that complements the existing brand while capturing Sister Corita's inspirational essence.

We embarked on a journey that extended beyond branding to encompass production and co-hosting. Our collaboration was rooted in a deep appreciation for Sister Corita's artistic legacy, particularly her ten rules of the Immaculate Heart Art Department. Oh, and Love. Lots and lots of love.

Drawing inspiration from Sister Corita’s iconic use of color and cutouts, we crafted a brand aesthetic that radiates with playful expression and joy. At the core of our visual system, the cutout heart integrated into the logo becomes a symbol of the series’ essence, embodying the spirit of artistic freedom and power in love that Sister Corita championed.

We embraced texture as a fundamental element in photography, aiming to spotlight the nuanced and often overlooked facets of Chicago. Our focus extended to the city's less visible corners, from the vital paths safeguarded by Safe Passage volunteers, ensuring children navigate through gang territories safely, to the remnants of discarded housing projects. These areas, rich with stories and resilience, provided a backdrop that speaks volumes of the city's complex beauty through a spirit of radical transparency.

Incorporating the concept of Dynamic Chromatic Expression, we aimed to infuse our imagery with textured color fields that reflect the vibrant, multifaceted essence of our subjects and their environments. These color fields serve as dynamic "fields of play," a canvas where the city's energy, movement, and vitality intersect with our artistic vision.

The result is a visual identity on a mission to fuse art with social activism, emphasizing vibrant colors and bold typography that speak to justice, peace, and love. Reflecting Sister Corita's belief in art's accessibility and transformative power, our design celebrates community strength and the beauty in everyday resilience. This identity not only honors Sister Corita's legacy but also embodies her vision of art as a catalyst for change, encouraging a mindful appreciation of the world around us.
